Steward Source-Available License Copyright (c) 2026 Agustin / Steward. All rights reserved. Steward is a free, unofficial character companion for tabletop roleplaying. It is distributed as a single HTML file that your browser downloads in order to run it. Because of that, its source is visible to anyone who opens it. Visible is not the same as unlicensed: this file states what you may and may not do with it. 1. WHAT THIS LICENSE COVERS This license covers the original material of the Steward project: its source code, rules engine, user interface, visual design, illustrations, icons, written copy and documentation. It does NOT cover: (a) Third-party material included in or alongside the project, which keeps its own license. See THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md. In particular, material from the System Reference Document 5.2.1 is licensed by Wizards of the Coast LLC under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International, and nothing in this license restricts your rights to that material under those terms. (b) The Steward name, logo and visual identity as indicators of origin, which are addressed in TRADEMARKS.md. (c) Any character data you enter. That is yours. It never leaves your device. 2. WHAT YOU MAY DO (a) Use Steward for any purpose, personal or commercial, at your table or anywhere else, free of charge. (b) Run it locally: download the file and open it offline, including keeping a copy for your own use so the application keeps working if the website goes away. (c) Read and study the source, including for learning purposes. (d) Quote short excerpts of the source or the copy for commentary, review, teaching, journalism or research, with attribution. (e) Report problems, suggest changes, and share the ideas you find here. 3. WHAT YOU MAY NOT DO WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION (a) Redistribute Steward, in whole or in substantial part, modified or unmodified, whether free or for a fee. This includes republishing it on another website or domain, bundling it into another product, and distributing it through an app store or package registry. (b) Present Steward, or a work derived from it, as your own, or remove or alter the copyright and attribution notices it carries. (c) Use the Steward name, logo or visual identity in a way likely to suggest that another product is Steward, comes from Steward, or is endorsed by it. Permission for any of the above can be requested at hello@stewardrpg.com, and may well be granted. The point of this section is that the decision stays with the author, not that the answer is no. 4. NO WARRANTY THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHOR BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE. Steward is not a source of official rules. Your books and your table remain the authority on how the game is played. 5. NOTE ON SCOPE This is a source-available license, not an open source license as defined by the Open Source Initiative, and it is not intended to be one. It is written to be readable by the people who actually use Steward rather than to be legally exhaustive. If you need certainty for a specific use, ask.
